Overview

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clark Atlanta University offers comprehensive programs leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics and the Master of Science (M.S.) in Applied Mathematics. Students with Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, or other transferable college credit may be able to complete the undergraduate program on an accelerated schedule. Qualified students may also take advantage of an accelerated B.S./M.S. pathway, providing an efficient transition to graduate study and the opportunity to earn both degrees in an abbreviated timeframe. The Department also offers a minor in Mathematics and a minor in Data Science and Analytics. 

Our degree programs expose students to sophisticated mathematics, challenging problems, and innovative teaching practices.  We provide an education that prepares our graduates for advanced graduate study and a wide range of career options in the mathematical sciences, including those in technology, engineering, health, academia, business, and government.  The Department offers student research opportunities and provides resources toward professional development. Students are also invited to attend and present their work at regional and national conferences.

Our dedicated faculty members are committed to individualized attention to support student success in all areas. They provide academic advising and mentoring to guide each student along their chosen path. The mathematics faculty also remains active and continuously contributes to the discipline through research and service. 

Another significant function of the Department is to provide mathematics instruction for all university degree programs and in sufficient quantity, so that they can perform knowledgeably, confidently, and intelligently in their chosen disciplines and fields of study, and to pursue higher education.  

The mission and vision of the Department of Mathematical Sciences support the academic goals of both the University and the School of Arts and Sciences and influence all decision-making.  Our mission is to cultivate logical, quantitative, and critical thinkers through a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes mathematical reasoning, proof, problem-solving, and the modeling of complex real-world phenomena. 

We are united through our collective vision to be a major force in producing competitive scholars and recognized professionals in mathematics and mathematics-related areas. We aim to equip our students with strong theoretical and applied mathematics content using up-to-date technologies and forging collaborations with other disciplines.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

Credit Hours: 122

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics develops students' ability to think abstractly, solve complex problems, and communicate mathematical ideas with precision. The curriculum balances theoretical foundations with computational and statistical methods, preparing graduates for careers in mathematics, finance, technology, education, government, and emerging quantitative fields, as well as graduate and professional study.

Minor in Mathematics

Credit Hours: 18

The Mathematics Minor strengthens students' mathematical foundation while developing critical thinking, logical reasoning, and analytical problem-solving skills. Designed to complement a variety of majors, the program equips students with the quantitative perspective and intellectual discipline needed to analyze and model complex problems, make informed decisions, and succeed in interdisciplinary study.

Minor in Data Science

Credit Hours: 18

The Data Science Minor equips students to transform data into actionable insights through programming, statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization. Designed for students across all majors, the program emphasizes practical, hands-on experience using modern analytical tools to solve real-world problems in business, healthcare, government, and scientific research.

Master of Science in Applied Mathematics

Credit Hours: 30

The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics prepares students to formulate, analyze, and solve complex problems arising in science, engineering, industry, and technology. Through advanced coursework in mathematical modeling, optimization, computational methods, and applied analysis, students develop the expertise needed to address interdisciplinary challenges and pursue technical leadership or doctoral study.

Student Activities

An engaging collegiate experience is built through participation, leadership, and service. Students are encouraged to become active members of departmental organizations, professional societies, research teams, conferences, outreach initiatives, and campus events that foster collaboration, build lasting relationships, and strengthen their sense of community. Opportunities to engage with local and national organizations further enhance professional development while connecting students with peers, alumni, and future employers.

Mathematical Society

The Department's Mathematical Society operates with the primary purpose of supporting the overall academic success of students in the mathematical sciences. The Society offers an intellectual and social space for students with interests in the mathematical sciences to promote scholarship, research and exploration by both majors and non-majors at the university. 

As a student-led organization, the CAUMS mission is to provide academic and professional support to students in the mathematical sciences. The society serves its purpose by providing scholastic forums, by offering mentoring and tutoring services, and by engaging the community in relevant academic and social activities.  

The mission of the Mathematical Society is achieved through the following objectives:

  1. To further the understanding and appreciation of, and interest in, mathematics and its related disciplines.
  2. To encourage students’ confidence and capability in the mathematical sciences. 
  3. To promote the enjoyment of mathematics through cooperative learning and recreational activities. 
  4. To promote mathematics as a tool for learning and encourage new ideas and ways of attaining professional goals.   
  5. To expose students to possible career interests and options in the field of mathematics and math-related areas. 
  6. To increase the number of students involved in math and science-related research. 
  7. To provide scholastic enrichment services, such as tutoring and mentoring, to students in the community.

Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society

Pi Mu Epsilon is a non-secret organization whose purpose is the promotion of scholarly activity in mathematics among students in academic institutions. It aims to do this by 1) electing members on an honorary basis according to their proficiency in mathematics, 2) engaging in activities designed to promote the mathematical and scholarly development of its members, and 3) taking any other measures which will further the purpose stated above.

Clark Atlanta University is a member of the Georgia Delta Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, along with Morehouse College and Spelman College.  

Students meeting the following criteria are eligible for membership: 

Undergraduate Students: 

  • Completed at least the equivalent of two semesters of calculus and two additional courses in mathematics, at or above the calculus level 
  • Maintained a grade point average equivalent to that of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale, both for all courses that lead to fulfillment of requirements for a major in the mathematical sciences, and also for all courses that lead to fulfillment of requirements for an undergraduate degree.  

Graduate Students: 

  • Meet qualifications of undergraduates 
  • Maintained at least a “B” average in mathematics during last school year prior to election

Student Support Resources

Student success extends beyond the classroom. A wide range of academic support services is available to help students strengthen their skills, overcome challenges, and achieve their educational goals. From mathematics tutoring laboratories and writing support to academic coaching, technology resources, and other campus services, these resources are designed to promote learning, build confidence, and support success throughout each student's academic journey.

Mathematics Labs

The Mathematics Tutoring Lab is located in McPheeters-Dennis Hall, Room 134. The Lab generally opens one week after classes begin and closes on the last day of classes. It is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the mathematical sciences. It is free and open to all students. No appointment is necessary for assistance.

Center for Academic and Student Success

The mission of the Center for Academic and Student Success (CASS) is to facilitate the academic success, retention, and holistic development of undergraduate students, from recruitment to graduation. 

CASS fosters, facilitates, and supports the advancement of undergraduate education at the University. These programs and services include: continuous assistance with and interpretation of academic requirements, regulations and procedures for students, faculty and parents; review and approval of transient study applications, ongoing coordination of General Education Core curriculum and interpretation of core requirements; academic policies regarding appeals of academic decisions and policies; and first-year experience program.The Executive Director of the Center for Academic and Student Success (CASS) supervises the planning and operations of the educational and student support units; including First- Year Seminar, Advising, and various retention initiatives.

The Dr. Bettye M. Clark Graduate Resource Center (GRC)

The Dr. Bettye M. Clark Graduate Resource Center (GRC) supports graduate and professional student learning and provides supplemental services tailored to graduate students’ needs. The GRC offers: 

  • Writing tutorial services
  • Conceptual paper, thesis, or dissertation formatting assistance
  • Editing services for small writing projects (less than 5 double-spaced pages)
  • Technology, printing, and copying access
  • Academic and professional development seminars, trainings, and workshops 

Scholarships & Donations

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is committed to helping students access the financial resources needed to achieve their academic goals. Through departmental scholarships, graduate assistantships, institutional awards, and external funding opportunities, students may be eligible for financial support that recognizes academic achievement, leadership, and potential. The opportunities listed below represent some of the department's largest and most common sources of funding; however, additional scholarships and funding opportunities may be available through the University and external organizations. We encourage students to explore all available resources and apply for every opportunity for which they are eligible.

Faculty-Led Research Opportunities

Students may have an opportunity to conduct faculty-led research in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Conducting research and performing data analysis enhances the development of students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. During these practical experiences, faculty members extend learning from the classroom to the real world through thoughtfully selected research questions. Students will be guided through the research process and will apply their knowledge in the mathematical sciences to make an impactful, intellectual contribution to the discipline.  

Faculty-led research experiences are suitable for students who have interests in the mathematical sciences, willing to learn something new and motivated to continue working through the unfamiliar. Time management, accountability, and a little creativity are also necessary for project completion. Such research experiences are a great way to display student leadership skills.

J. J. Dennis Scholarship

On behalf of the Joseph James Dennis Foundation, the department awards the J. J. Dennis Endowed Scholarship to qualified, distinguished junior and senior mathematics majors. Scholarship recipients must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 overall and 3.25 in mathematics courses. Applicants at the first-year graduate level of study should have a background in mathematics that includes a course in an introduction to modern algebra, at least one course in introductory real analysis beyond calculus, and at least one in introductory complex analysis.  Students without such background may be admitted, but they are required to take appropriate courses to address deficiencies.  

The J. J. Dennis Foundation is the University’s largest foundation. Dr. Dennis was a Department Chair at Clark College for 25 years.

Dr. Lakeshia Legette Jones STEM Scholarship

The Dr. Lakeshia Legette Jones Scholarship recognizes outstanding women pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in their communities and professions. Established to encourage and support the next generation of women in STEM, the scholarship is awarded to students who have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and exhibit strong character and a dedication to excellence in their academic and professional pursuits.
