Supporting Student Success Through Food Security

It has been reported that one in three college students experiences food insecurity, which can jeopardize their ability to focus academically, persist toward graduation, and feel a sense of belonging within their campus community. Across the United States, college and university students face financial challenges that extend beyond tuition and academic expenses. The rising costs of everyday necessities, including rent, utilities, transportation, and food, have contributed to increased food and housing insecurity among students attending two-year and four-year institutions.

In response to this growing concern, Sodexo has partnered with Swipe Out Hunger, a leading national nonprofit organization committed to addressing food insecurity among college students. Through this collaborative initiative, Clark Atlanta University will establish a “Meal Swipe Bank” to help provide additional dining support to eligible scholars experiencing food insecurity. Meal swipes will be contributed by Sodexo, along with faculty, staff, and students who choose to donate unused swipes from their Panther Silver and Bronze dining plans.

Who Is Eligible, and How Do I Apply?

Any currently enrolled scholar experiencing food insecurity may apply for assistance through the CAU Swipe Out Hunger Program. However, scholars who have been approved for a meal plan exemption for the current semester are not eligible to participate in the program.

Scholars may nominate themselves for assistance by completing the online application using the link below:

Application Review and Distribution of Meal Swipes

Upon submission of the CAU Swipe Out Hunger application, the Office of Student Life will review the request and determine eligibility for approval or denial.

If approved, the Panther Paw Office will be notified to facilitate the distribution of meal swipes. Eligible scholars may receive up to ten (10) meal swipes per semester, which will be added to their Panther Paw Card within two to three (2–3) business days of the submission request.

Through this partnership, Clark Atlanta University remains committed to supporting the well-being, academic success, and overall campus experience of its scholars by helping reduce food insecurity and ensuring that students have access to essential dining resources.
