The Minor in Creative Writing focuses on the processes and techniques of original composition in various literary forms including fiction, drama, poetry, and creative non-fiction. The program provides students the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively in these four genres and to expand their ability to think more critically and write more effectively. The skills learned in the minor pave the way for students to enter a variety of professions.
Student Learning Outcomes
Graduates with a Minor in Creative Writing will be able to:
- Demonstrate mastery of the writing discipline by engaging in extensive study of genre and literary analysis.
- Demonstrate knowledge of editing and revision techniques, the world of publishing, and other career-related aspects of writing.
- Demonstrate and employ methods of intensive revision.
- Demonstrate an understanding of various forms of literature, including poetry, fiction, drama, and creative non-fiction.
- Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of professional writers’ styles and voices in fiction, poetry, drama, and creative non-fiction.
- Produce original work in specific genres, culminating in the production of publishable quality work that will be submitted to literary magazines and/or used as a writing sample for admission to a MFA program.
