Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of English and Modern Languages is to offer diverse interdisciplinary, and innovative course offerings in English, French, and Spanish to prepare students for entry into the global workforce and thus transform them intellectually, culturally, and professionally. Students are introduced to and grounded in composition and creative writing, digital literacies, various genres of literature, critical analysis, and research. Additionally, the department contributes to the global awareness and education of our students, by exposing them to various languages and cultures and training them to become competitors alongside their peers in a global economy that has grown independent through trade, travel and technology.

Vision Statement

The vision of the Department of English and Modern Languages is threefold: 

1.) to be a collaborative center of innovative teaching, learning, and research that will enhance students’ ability to think and write critically in order to become well-read global citizens through enriched programs and curricula

2.) to develop a multilingual community of learners, which affords students the opportunity to perfect their language skills for global communication and awareness, 

3.) understand content and innovations that connect them to a larger world.   

Programs

  • Bachelor of Arts in English

    The B.A. in English offers undergraduate students a varied and rich curriculum with a multicultural approach to teaching literature to include Asian, Africana, Caribbean, and Native American literatures. Students take survey and specialty courses in linguistics and in English, British, American, and African-American literatures including a variety of colloquia, and are required to take two years of foreign language and write a senior thesis. The enriched curricular courses prepare students to further their education in graduate and professional schools and to assume careers in public and private sectors, teaching and administration.

  • Bachelor of Arts in French

    The B.A. in French prepares students to be bilingual and fluent in written and conversational French and trains students for careers in foreign services, business, consulting, publishing, law enforcement, legal and medical fields, teaching French content area in grades K-12, as well as interpreting and translating for multinational organizations, various local, state, and federal agencies topics. 

  • Bachelor of Arts in Spanish

    The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish Program prepares students to be bilingual and fluent in written and conversational Spanish and trains students for careers in the Foreign Service, business, consulting, publishing, law enforcement, legal and medical fields and teaching Spanish content area in grades K-12. With Study Abroad experience and further training, students could get involved in fields such as interpreting and translating for multinational organizations, and for various local, state, and federal agencies.

  • Master of Arts in English

    The M.A. in English offers a varied and rich curriculum to graduate students, employing a multicultural approach to teaching literature and expanding its curriculum to include Africana, Caribbean, Asian, and Native American literatures. Students will be grounded in literary analysis, critical thinking and writing, and obtain thorough knowledge and application of literary theories to literary texts as well as the established canon, major periods, and lesser known authors.

  • Master of Arts in French

    The M.A. in French further prepares its students to listen, speak, read, write, and translate fluently in French. With the programs’ emphasis on the traditional model of language, literature, culture and methodology, students acquire superior reading and translation skills adequate for easy comprehension of scholarly articles in French and have a thorough familiarity with major periods, authors and techniques of literary criticism. 

  • Master of Arts in Spanish

    The M.A. in Spanish further prepares its students to listen, speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish. With the program’s emphasis on the traditional model of language, literature, culture and methodology, students will acquire superior reading and translation skills adequate for easy comprehension of scholarly articles in Spanish and have a thorough familiarity with major periods, authors and techniques of literary criticism.
