Clark Atlanta University’s Student Success Center: Building a Future Centered on Student Achievement

For the first time in more than two decades, Clark Atlanta University is preparing to open a major academic facility designed to transform how students access resources, build connections, and achieve their goals. The Student Success Center, scheduled to open in Fall 2026, represents a significant investment in the University’s future and reinforces CAU’s longstanding commitment to student achievement, innovation, and holistic support.

The Student Success Center reflects a vision for a more connected and accessible student experience—one where academic resources, career preparation, mentorship, and student support services come together under one roof to help students thrive throughout their collegiate journey.

Patrick Turner, Ed.D., associate provost for Student Success & Innovation at Clark Atlanta University, has played an integral role in shaping the vision, programming, and operational model for the Student Success Center. In this role, he provides strategic leadership for the university’s student success initiatives, including academic advising, retention efforts, career development, student support services, and innovative programs designed to enhance the student experience. Working alongside university leadership and campus partners, Dr. Turner has helped ensure the center serves as a comprehensive, student-centered hub designed to support students from enrollment through graduation and beyond.

“The Student Success Center represents far more than a new building; it reflects Clark Atlanta University’s continued investment in the success of its students,” Dr. Turner said. “As CAU’s first major construction project in more than two decades, it demonstrates that student achievement is at the center of our institutional priorities. This investment creates an environment where students have access to the academic resources, guidance, and support they need to thrive while reinforcing CAU’s commitment to preparing future leaders through a holistic educational experience.”

Creating a Centralized Hub for Student Success

The vision behind the Student Success Center was to create an environment where students can easily access resources and support systems needed throughout their academic journey.

Rather than navigating multiple offices across campus, students will find essential services in one location. The center will house the Center for Academic and Student Success, the Student Success Project, and Career & Professional Development, creating a comprehensive network of support focused on academic achievement, retention, and career readiness.

“Our vision was to create a centralized, collaborative space where students can access the services they need in one location while fostering a culture of care, belonging, and academic excellence,” Dr. Turner said. “Rather than navigating multiple offices across campus, students will have seamless access to advising, academic support, career services, coaching, and other essential resources. The Student Success Center is designed to remove barriers, encourage collaboration among support units, and create an environment where every student feels supported throughout their academic journey.”

Through these integrated services, students will have access to academic advising; tutoring; mentoring; success coaching; career exploration; internship preparation; graduate school planning; workshops; and technology-enhanced learning spaces.

Dr. Turner said the center will allow the university to provide more proactive support while helping identify student needs earlier and connect students with the appropriate resources.

“By integrating these services into one location, we can provide more proactive support, identify student needs earlier, and connect students with the right resources to improve academic performance, persistence, and career readiness,” Dr. Turner said.

Designing a Space That Reflects CAU’s Identity

As Clark Atlanta University’s first major academic building project in more than 20 years, the Student Success Center represents a significant milestone in the continued evolution of the university’s campus.

Bonita Dukes, vice president of Facilities Management, has provided leadership and oversight throughout the planning, design, development, and construction of the Student Success Center. Working closely with university leadership, Title III—the project’s funding source, the design and construction teams, and campus stakeholders, Dukes has helped guide the project from an initial vision into a building that will soon serve CAU students.

“The Student Success Center represents an important milestone in the continued evolution of Clark Atlanta University’s campus,” Dukes said. “As the university’s first academic building built in more than two decades, it represents an investment not only in a new facility but in our students and in the long-term vision for the campus.”

Strategically positioned to support future campus growth, the center is designed to serve as a prominent campus destination and catalyst for continued development while strengthening physical and programmatic connections across the university.

Dukes emphasized that the project was developed with the goal of creating more than additional campus space. The design process focused on how architecture could enhance the student experience, create a stronger sense of place, and support CAU’s broader academic and institutional goals.

“From a facilities perspective, this project has given us an opportunity to think beyond simply adding square footage,” Dukes said. “We have been intentional about how a new building can contribute to the campus experience, create a stronger sense of place, and support the university’s broader academic and institutional goals.”

Working with Lord Aeck Sargent, the design team focused on creating a space that feels distinctly like Clark Atlanta University while keeping students at the center of every decision. The building creates a memorable sense of arrival through an inviting front porch and bold CAU red canopy that extends toward campus and establishes a welcoming entrance.

The front porch transitions into a transparent, double-height lobby that will serve as the social heart of the building. Designed for gathering, interaction, and engagement, the lobby will feature a large wall graphic celebrating student achievements and reinforcing CAU’s heritage, culture, and commitment to empowering future leaders.

“The goal was to create an environment that feels open and welcoming while making it easier for students to find the people, services, and spaces they need to move forward,” Dukes said.

Bringing the Vision to Reality

The project has progressed through several major phases, including planning and design, demolition and site preparation, utility relocation, foundation work, and structural construction. Each milestone has brought the university closer to realizing a facility designed around student needs.

“One of the most rewarding parts of the project has been watching the vision evolve from an idea on paper into a building that is now taking shape on campus,” Dukes said.

Dukes noted that every stage of the project has remained connected to its larger purpose: supporting students and strengthening the future of Clark Atlanta University.

“Ultimately, the process has been about keeping the larger vision in focus,” Dukes said. “Every design decision, coordination effort, and construction milestone has been connected to how students will experience and use this building and the role it will play in the future of CAU.”

Investing in the Future of Panther Leaders

As the Student Success Center prepares to welcome students in Fall 2026, university leaders hope the CAU community recognizes the deeper meaning behind this historic investment.

For Dr. Turner, the center represents a commitment to ensuring students have the resources, relationships, and opportunities needed to reach their full potential.

“I hope our campus community sees this as a tangible expression of Clark Atlanta University’s unwavering commitment to student success,” Dr. Turner said. “This center is not simply about bricks and mortar; it is about investing in people.”

Dr. Turner added that the center will serve as a foundation for collaboration and continued innovation in student support.

“The Student Success Center represents the future of student support at Clark Atlanta University,” Dr. Turner said. “The landscape of higher education continues to evolve, and students need more than academic instruction. Students need comprehensive support systems that address their academic, personal, and professional development.”

“This center reflects our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement,” Dr. Turner continued. “It will serve as a place where students are empowered to discover their purpose, develop their talents, and prepare to lead in their professions and communities.”

Dukes hopes students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors see the Center as more than a physical structure.

“I hope the CAU community sees more than a beautiful new building,” Dukes said. “I hope they see possibility.”

For Dukes, the project represents both a professional responsibility and a personal commitment to creating an environment where students feel supported and inspired.

“For me, this project is personal,” Dukes said. “As the university architect, I think about the plans, details, materials, and construction. But as a mother, I also think about our students as someone’s children—young people navigating one of the most formative journeys of their lives.”

“Every door, hallway, and line drawn on the architectural plans was made with intention because we know that environments shape experiences,” Dukes continued. “My hope is that the Student Success Center becomes a place where students find the resources, confidence, connections, and encouragement they need to move forward.”

The Student Success Center stands as a symbol of Clark Atlanta University’s continued investment in its students and its future. Through intentional design, collaborative programming, and a commitment to student-centered support, the new facility will serve as a cornerstone for academic achievement, professional preparation, and the development of the next generation of Panther leaders.
