Clark Atlanta University Honors the Life and Legacy of Dr. Obie Clayton Jr.
Clark Atlanta University mourns the passing of Obie Clayton, Jr., Ph.D., a distinguished sociologist, educator, researcher, and advocate whose work transformed the lives of students, strengthened academic institutions, and advanced scholarship focused on Black communities. Dr. Clayton passed away on June 11, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, service, and intellectual excellence.
A nationally recognized scholar, Dr. Clayton dedicated his career to expanding opportunities for students and elevating research that addressed some of society's most pressing issues, including race, inequality, fatherhood, mass incarceration, social justice, and community empowerment. Throughout his decades of service in higher education, he earned a reputation as a visionary leader whose scholarship and mentorship inspired generations.
At Clark Atlanta University, Dr. Clayton's impact was profound. He served as director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creativity (CURC), where he championed undergraduate scholarship and created pathways for students to engage in meaningful research experiences. Through his leadership, countless students were introduced to the power of inquiry, critical thinking, and academic discovery, helping prepare them for graduate study, professional careers, and lifelong learning.
Dr. Clayton also served as editor of Phylon, the historic scholarly journal founded by Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois in 1940. Under his stewardship, the journal continued its longstanding mission of advancing research and intellectual discourse centered on the experiences of people of African descent. His commitment to preserving and elevating Black scholarship ensured that Phylon remained an influential platform for researchers and thought leaders around the world.
Prior to his tenure at Clark Atlanta University, Dr. Clayton held numerous leadership positions at Morehouse College, including director and executive director of the Morehouse Research Institute, chair and professor of sociology, and vice provost for research. Throughout his distinguished career, he also served on the faculties of the University of Massachusetts Boston, the University of Nebraska Omaha, and the University of Georgia, where he was the Donald L. Hollowell Distinguished Professor of Social Justice and Civil Rights Studies.
His scholarly achievements earned national recognition. Dr. Clayton served as president of the Association of Black Sociologists and was honored as the American Sociological Association's Edmond W. Ware Distinguished Professor. He secured millions of dollars in research funding and contributed extensively to scholarship that examined the lived experiences of Black families and communities.
While his professional accomplishments were extraordinary, colleagues, students, and friends often speak most passionately about Dr. Clayton's generosity, humility, and unwavering commitment to others. He was known as a mentor who invested deeply in students, a colleague who readily offered support and guidance, and a leader who believed in creating opportunities for those around him.
Dr. Clayton embodied the values that define Clark Atlanta University: excellence, service, scholarship and leadership. His work advanced the university's mission while helping cultivate future generations of researchers, scholars, and changemakers.
As the Clark Atlanta University community reflects on his life and contributions, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, former students, and colleagues. We are grateful for the indelible mark he left on our institution and the broader academic community.
A celebration of life service honoring Dr. Clayton will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Saint Simons Island, Georgia.
Though Dr. Clayton's passing leaves a tremendous void, his legacy endures through the students he mentored, the scholarship he advanced, and the countless lives he touched. His commitment to knowledge, justice, and service will continue to inspire the Clark Atlanta University community for generations to come.
