About Richard L. Lucas, Jr., Ph.D.
Richard L. Lucas, Jr., serves as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Clark Atlanta University (CAU). Dr. Lucas comes to CAU with over 25 years of experience in higher education. He served in vice-presidential positions at Howard University, Elizabeth City State University, and Bowie State University. Dr. Lucas is an accomplished Chief Development Officer with a proven track record of raising millions for scholarships and programs. He has played an integral role in the launch, management, and support of several comprehensive campaigns including two that exceeded their 250-million-dollar goal.
Dr. Lucas has successfully led efforts in support of alumni, state, and community relations. He served as an executive for several charitable foundations and has first-hand experience in the management of fundraising processes, systems, and technology. Effective, transparent administration of charitable funds and accounts is among his experience as well. Dr. Lucas is a sought-after thought-leader on philanthropy and served as a consultant for non-profit, educational, and health-related organizations on transformational giving.
Dr. Lucas is a well-versed Information Technology (IT) professional and served as an adjunct instructor teaching on leadership with technology in 21st-century schools. Dr. Lucas is a member of the Governor’s Workforce Development Committee – Taskforce on Cybersecurity for the state of Maryland. Dr. Lucas has successfully applied his systems, technology, and analytical skills to the development of innovative experiential learning opportunities that benefit students and institutions. Related skill and experience have supported the creation of proposals and “cases for support” that have resulted in significant charitable investment, as well as strategic partnerships with corporations, organizations, and foundations.
Dr. Lucas is a graduate of Cornell University’s Administrative Management Institute, the Millennium Leadership Initiative sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Executive Fellows program sponsored by Adventist HealthCare, and Leadership Maryland. He serves on several boards and is a member of the National Society for Distinguished Professionals. Dr. Lucas has held memberships with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and Black Data Processing Associates. Dr. Lucas has a B.S. in Information Systems Management and an Ed.M. and Ph.D. in Education.
