Mission
In harmony with university goals, the Department of Political Science is committed to the provision of high quality, innovative education in political science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department intertwines rigorous academic study, community involvement, and a progressive global vision. We cater to a student body that is largely African American, but also includes a diverse cadre of international student form Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. The department has gained national and international acclaim for the substance of its program and the quality of its graduates.
The department currently comprises of approximately 300 undergraduate and 96 graduate students and is one of two such departments in an Historically Black College or Universitiy offering the doctorate degree in political science. Central to its mission, the department continues to play a leading role in producing graduates holding B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science. Our graduates teach and work all around the world.
The political science curriculum places directed emphasis on the political experience of African Americans in the United States, as well as black communities around the world. While simultaneously seeking to develop a universal understanding of political behavior. The contradictions of the U.S. political and economic systems are critically analyzed, and careful attention is paid to alternative arrangements that portend to produce desirable societal change for members of social systems that have been historic victims of oppression.
The Department of Political Science has a solid record of teaching, research, and community involvement that has garnered an international reputation and critical acclaim for our faculty and students for programs of study offered leaingd to the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy.
