Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development at Clark Atlanta University Awarded $10.6 Million from NIH

ATLANTA, GA--August 28, 2019-- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) July 30, 2019 awarded a $10.6 million renewal grant to the Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development (CCRTD) at Clark Atlanta University (CAU).  This award represents the culmination of a year-long collective effort by many individuals within CCRTD.  The $10.6 million award will enable CCRTD to expand and enhance current research and educational activities at the Center. 

Dr. Shafiq Khan, PI of the award highlights that this grant will focus on three specific aims. “This grant will allow us to: 1) expand and enhance current research programs in prostate cancer, 2) restructure and modernize research core facilities creating a more efficient research infrastructure, and 3) develop a more integrated community engagement program.”  CCRTD will also utilize its current strengths in professional development programs in basic research and in community outreach and educational programs to enhance this new infrastructure. 

“We are very proud of the CCRTD, which is a core component of the “Discovery” portfolio of research, innovation and entrepreneurial programs at Clark Atlanta University,” said Lucille Maugé, CAU Interim President. “This grant will further allow Dr. Khan and his team of talented CAU researchers to surge ahead in building-out our premier Prostate Cancer Center.”

The Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development (CCRTD) at Clark Atlanta University is one of the most comprehensive prostate cancer research and educational programs in the country. Established in 1999 with direct support from the National Institutes of Health Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) program, the CCRTD is a designated Center of Excellence and leverages the strengths of CAU departments of biology and chemistry, as well as experts in cancer biology, drug discovery and behavioral aspects of cancer. 

Through comprehensive research and training, community-based outreach and its bi-annual National Prostate Cancer Symposium, the CCRTD works towards minimizing the higher incidence of prostate cancer related mortality among African-American men.
