Clark Atlanta University School of Education Receives Funding for Institute

ATLANTA, GA – March 6, 2019 -- Clark Atlanta University is pleased to announce that the School of Education has been awarded a $275,000.00 planning grant award from the Rich Foundation. The planning grant will support the design and development of the Clark Atlanta University HBCU Executive Leadership Institute, focused on the preparation and development of HBCU presidents and executive leaders.
The planning grant will enable Clark Atlanta University to establish a sustainable model for increasing the quality and supply of qualified candidates to serve as HBCU presidents and other executive level leaders. The vision is to develop a performance based leadership preparation program that will engage aspiring and new HBCU Presidents in an extended learning network that provides opportunities to practice and demonstrate proficiency in real work, in real time, in the real HBCU working environment. During the planning phase of this project, a program director will be hired to facilitate an Applied Research Team (ART), made up of faculty, former HBCU leaders, and other scholars to conduct research related to HBCU leader performance, sustainability, and supply.
Dr. J. Fidel Turner, Jr., Dean of the School of Education and Dr. Mary Hooper, Associate Vice President for Online Learning and Continuing Education & Professor of Educational Leadership are the Co-Principal Investigators and submitted the planning grant proposal to the Rich Foundation for the development of the Clark Atlanta University HBCU Executive Leadership Institute.
The Rich Foundation is a private Atlanta, Georgia foundation whose purpose is to benefit non-profit organizations in the field of arts, civic, education, health, environment and social welfare in the metropolitan Atlanta area. While the Foundation supports all of these areas, its primary focus has been in the field of health and education with an emphasis on early learning and programs that benefit people with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Established in 1943, the Foundation was created to distribute a share of the profits of Rich’s, Inc., the Atlanta department store.
