Clark Atlanta University Choirs Host A Holiday Festival of Lessons, Carols and Spiritual Songs

ATLANTA, GA – November 21, 2018 -- As a musical gift to the greater Atlanta community, the Clark Atlanta University Choirs will present “A Festival of Lessons, Carols, and Spiritual Songs” on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at 7:06 pm. The evening will include a varied repertoire representing the holiday classics and arrangements by composers of the African diaspora.
“This special edition of the Philharmonic Concert commemorates the 30th Anniversary of Clark Atlanta University and the more than 100-year-old tradition of lessons and carols. The audience is guaranteed to experience a moving and memorable musical journey,” said Dr. Curtis Everett Powell, Associate Professor of Music, Coordinator of the Church Music Program and Choral Director.
This year’s Holiday Concert returns to Friendship Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 27th and features the symphony in collaboration with the Clark Atlanta University Concert Choirs.
The choir will perform renditions of “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by Moses Hogan, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Laudsden, “Behold the Star” by William Dawson, “The Night that Christ was Born” by Kirk Franklin, and “Hallelujah Chorus” from "Messiah" by George Handel, among others.
The Clark Atlanta University Philharmonic Society is a nationally respected choral ensemble that perpetuates a proud century-old tradition of artistic clarity, stylistic authority, and brilliant choral tone.
Early choral conductors of the Clark experience included Professors J. DeKoven Killingsworth, Thomas Hager, and Glynn E. Halsey, among others. The Choirs, which dates back more than 100 years, performs the gamut of the choral genre, from major classical literature to popular repertoire. It has a special affinity for performing works drawn from the vast storehouse of the African-American traditions. This includes African Folk songs, spirituals, gospel, jazz, and similar works of African-American composers.
