Standing Committees of the University Senate
The University Senate is empowered to consider and make recommendations concerning all matters of general University interest. It may consider any matter referred to it by the President or Trustees. The Senate may, on its own initiative, submit recommendations to the President on any matter affecting the interests of the University. The Senate has the authority to consider and investigate any question of University policy, any aspect of governing the University and any general issue related to the welfare of the University, and to make recommendations regarding such matters to the appropriate decision-making bodies or officers of the University.
Standing Committees of the University Senate
The Executive Committee sets the order of business of the Senate and recommends the annual order of business for Standing Committees. The Executive Committee handles business on an emergency basis between Senate meetings, makes recommendations of assignments to other committees and establishes ad hoc committees, which are approved by the senate. This Committee reviews and recommends long and short range plans for the University and may consider any matter within the jurisdiction of the Senate. All actions of the Executive Committee are approved by the Senate at its next scheduled meeting.
Committee on Rights and Rules
The Committee on Rights and Rules considers and investigates the adequacy of all rules regarding the conduct of resident members of the University community and the adequacy of procedures for making and applying such rules.
Committee on Governance
The Committee on Governance considers and investigates questions related to the governance of the University. At least once annually, and more often if requested by the Senate or its Executive Committee, the Committee on Governance reports its activities. It submits any proposals it may have with respect to the governing of the University to the Senate.
Committee on Budget and Planning
The Committee on Budget and Planning reviews the current budget as early in the academic as practical. The Committee considers issues that arise in the course of the preparation of the budget and reviews plans for the development of the University budget in advance of financial decisions with respect to such plans. The purpose of this committee is to advise the President, through its report to the Senate, on matters that affect the making of the budget for the succeeding fiscal year and resource allocation. Its role is to make recommendations about the major parameters of the budget that establish in a broad way the priorities which govern the use of the University’s resources.
Committee on Community Relations
The Committee on Community Relations shall assist the Senate in developing and enhancing public service programs which serve the needs and interests of the local community by applying those measures which are unique to the University and which facilitate educational, economic and social improvements within the community. The Committee serves as an advisory body to the Senate in the identification of entrepreneurial ventures that involve the extended use and support of the University’s resources to engage in community projects. The Committee reviews a range of University outreach programs, including economic development activities, personal, educational and professional enrichment activities, conferences, workshops and other community service activities.
Committee on Computer and Information and Technology
The Committee on Computer and Information Technology recommends policies concerning the allocation of computing resources and the assignment of priorities for computer use and management information system services. The Committee evaluates these policies regularly to ensure that academic and administrative needs are adequately served. The Committee establishes priorities and guidelines for computer and information system usage and ensures that the services provided among the user groups are balanced. The Committee also monitors the profile of computer resources and service usage and ensures that accurate records are kept to facilitate monitoring. The Committee makes recommendations on the type and size of academic computing resources selected by the University and develops strategies to ensure that faculty and students make practical use of available resources.
