The purpose of the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Program
is to assist participating secondary students in recognizing
and developing their potential to excel in math and/or science
and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these
fields. The program is committed to providing a year-round educational
experience which will excite, motivate and prepare its fifty-seven
participants. The program is 100% federally funded. Therefore,
all program services are offered at no cost to the participants.
The major objective of the Math and Science Program is to prepare
its motivated math and science students for the college experience
and to demonstrate the relationship between higher education,
responsibility to community and respect for oneself and others.
Naturally, the academic aspect of the program is critical and
is held to the highest standard. However, the student's ability
to contribute to the social communities of which he/she is a
part is considered equally important.
The students are encouraged
to participate in both an academic year component as well as
a summer, residential component.
