ATLANTA, GA – March 6, 2019 – Clark Atlanta University (CAU) announced today that James D. McJunkins, M.A, Assistant Professor of Journalism, has been inducted into the Southern Press Regional Institute (SPRI) Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place Feb 28-March 1, during the 68th Annual Southern Press Regional Institute, hosted by the Savannah State University Department of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Founded in 1951, the SPRI is the third oldest scholastic journalism institute founded at a historically black college and university (HBCU) after the establishment of press associations at Florida A&M University (1950) and Lincoln University, Missouri (1949). Prior to integration, it played a significant role in the training and professional development of many of the country’s most renowned African-American journalists.
“I am very honored to receive this award,” said James D. McJunkins. “I have been associated with the Southern Regional Press Institute since I was a student at Tuskegee University back in the ‘60s. We always looked forward to attending the workshops.”
The CAU Panther Newspaper, Clark Atlanta University’s student-run newspaper, also took second place for Best Overall Newspaper. A plaque was presented to the Panther editorial team, including Josh McJunkins (Photography Editor), Nailah Heard, Terri A. Blige, Trishunda A. Mooney (Editor-in-Chief), Markayla Brooks (2018-2019 Miss Panther) and Ashton Edmunds (Sports Editor).
