ATLANTA, GA -- October 5, 2018 – The Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights (“The Lowery Institute”), a grass-roots, community-based organization dedicated to training, developing, empowering, and inspiring leaders to improve their communities for the common good, will celebrate Dr. Joseph E. Lowery’s 97thbirthday on October 7th, 2018 on the campus of Clark Atlanta University at the Bishop Cornelius Henderson Student Center from 3- 6 p.m. The event will feature live music, refreshments and a star-studded list of special invited guests, to include Hank Aaron, Dr. Reverend C.T. Vivian, Andrew Young, andRepresentative John Lewis.
For his 97thbirthday celebration, Dr. Lowery is renewing his plea to millennials to engage in the democratic process and hopes this Vote-a-thonwill energize a youth-fueled movement. The Lowery Institute—a 501(c)(3)— openly supports civic participation and is invested in providing platforms which allow disproportionally disadvantaged communities the opportunity to participate in our democracy.
“To help address historically low youth voter participation, The Lowery Institutes believes it’s our mission to mobilize available resources, through non-partisan efforts, to register voters, regardless of political leanings”, said Cheryl Lowery, President andChief Executive Officer, of The Lowery Institute. She continued, “despite a very polarized political environment, young voters between the ages of 18 and 29 account for the lion’s share of newly registered voters. These statistics reaffirm our belief that youth will play a pivotal role in shaping the American landscape in business, the environment, the community, andpolitics.”
Since its founding in 2001, Dr. Lowery and The Lowery Institute have relentlessly fought for freedom and equality for marginalized groups and underserved communities across the world. Furthermore, to expand its reach and impact, The Lowery Institute regularly trains and certifies an army of Change Agents to teach conflict resolution principles, provide peer mediation, administer academic tutoring and support social action initiatives.
The Lowery Institute would like to invite media to cover the event and have the opportunity to conduct one-on-one interviews with The Lowery Institute President and CEO Chery Lowery and possibly Dr. Lowery.
