ATLANTA (October 21, 2016)    During the annual meeting of the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Board of Trustees, the multi-purpose room inside the Bishop Cornelius Henderson Student Center was named in honor longtime former board chairwoman Juanita P. Baranco, J.D.  The multi-purpose room, which recently underwent a major renovation, will now be known as the Juanita Powell Baranco, J.D. Multi-Purpose Room.  The honor was unveiled before a group of friends, CAU trustees, students, husband Gregory and CAU President Ronald A. Johnson.

A plaque featuring historical facts about Mrs. Baranco’s life and contributions to education adorns the main entrance to the multi-purpose room.  The naming honor comes as Mrs. Baranco was also awarded emerita status following her 2015 resignation from the board after nearly two decades of service to CAU students.  She first joined the Board of Trustees in 1997 and served as its chairwoman from 2003 to 2013.  Mrs. Baranco fought back tears as she described the joyous moment.

“The fact that they chose the multi-purpose room to name for me is the highest honor I’ve ever received,” said Mrs. Baranco.  “My life’s work has been to promote students.  My whole philosophy in board work is to be student-centered,” she said.

Mrs. Baranco is executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Baranco Automotive Group, which includes Mercedes-Benz and Smart Center of Buckhead.  She has been featured multiple times in Georgia Trend Magazine’s annual list of the “100 Most Influential Georgians.”  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University.  In May 2014 she was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa.  She is a member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar Associations of Georgia and Louisiana.
