ATLANTA (April 14, 2015) – Two-time Grammy-nominated saxophonist and flutist Najee will headline the 22nd Annual Jazz Under the Stars Benefit Concert Saturday, May 2, at 7 p.m. on the Harkness Hall Quadrangle at Clark Atlanta University (CAU).  Najee will conduct a private Master Class for selected CAU music majors Friday, May 1.

A native New Yorker, Najee has made a career following his passion and keen intuition by pushing musical boundaries that have made him an international pioneer in the music industry.  He has collaborated with many in the music business, including: Prince, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Herbie Hancock.  Najee’s technical agility, grace, compositional prowess, and fearless genre bending have made him one of the most sought-after musicians of his generation.

With two platinum and four gold albums under his belt, Najee is an icon whose musical vision spawned an entire new genre by fusing the music close to his heart, R&B and jazz.  An alumnus of the New England Conservatory of Music, Najee was mentored by jazz giants Frank Foster and Jimmy Heath, as well as classical maven and flutist Harold Jones of the New York Philharmonic.

Multifaceted recording artist and writer Kathleen Bertrand is a native Atlantan whose performances have ranged from two Olympic Games to performances before two presidents, and appearances at jazz festivals worldwide.  Bertrand toured and recorded as vocalist with jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers.  She has opened for many of America’s finest jazz artists, including Ray Charles, Will Downing, Rachelle Ferrell, Roy Ayers, Najee and Kenny G.  Her fan base includes radio and internet listeners across the United States as well as in England, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, New Zealand, France, the Netherlands and Brazil.

Since 1992, the CAU Guild, which includes some of Atlanta’s most influential women, has raised nearly $2 million in scholarships.  Corporate tables and sponsorships are available.  For info, contact twana@therigsbygroup.com.  Individual tickets are $70 each; tables are $700 each.  To purchase tickets, go to Eventbrite.com, cau.edu or call 404-880-8219.
