All new employees are required
to attend new employee orientation on their first day of employment.
All orientation
sessions are held in the OITC conference room (lower level of
Harkness Hall) from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. During
this orientation, the new employees will complete all necessary
new-hire paperwork, receive a general overview of University
policies and procedures and the benefits package, and will be
provided with other important information that they need to know
as new employees.
In order for this process to be as efficient as possible, the
recruiting and selection process must be coordinated with Human
Resources. This includes the completion of an Application for
Employment, and the extending of both the contingent and final
employment offers. All candidates receiving contingent offers
of employment must complete a Background Investigation Consent
form so that we can conduct the background check. It is also
critical that the approved Personnel Action Form, with all appropriate
signatures, be submitted to HR before the employee's first day
of work.
Following is a step-by-step breakdown of the hiring process.
Ongoing consultation with the Office of Human Resources is suggested
throughout this process.
- Vacancy in a department is
identified.
- Hiring manager must complete
an employment requisition form, attach an updated job
description, and submit it to the Office of Human Resources after
obtaining all required signatures [Hiring Manager, Dean/VP, Budget
(unrestricted funds), or Grants & Contracts (restricted funds)].
The requisition and job description are reviewed for consistency
with guidelines and signed by HR representative.
- Human Resources will forward
the requisition to the Vice President for Finance and Business
Services. All requisitions must be signed by the VP for Finance
and Business Services (no exceptions).
- Once approved by the VP for
Finance and Business Services, the requisition and job description
are returned to Human Resources, logged in and given a job number.
- Positions are posted on the
CAU Job Opportunities Listing, the CAU Web site, and other sources
as requested. All positions must be posted for at least five
(5) business days.
- Resumes/applications are reviewed
and qualified applicants are referred to the hiring manager.
- Hiring manager reviews referred
candidate credentials and conducts interviews of those deemed
qualified for the position.
- All finalist candidates who
are interviewed must have a completed application and signed
release for background check on file in the Human Resources Office.
(Manager should send candidate to Human Resources prior to or
at conclusion of interview for completion.)
- Hiring manager notifies Human
Resources when candidate is selected and department is ready
to make a contingent job offer.
- Human Resources conducts a
background check on the candidate selected and advises the manager
of the outcome, if negative.
- A Personnel Action Form (PAF)
must be completed by hiring manager and forwarded to Human Resources
at least two (2) days prior to employee's first day of employment.
Two levels of management within department must sign PAF, as
well as Budgets or Grants & Contracts, and the Vice President
for Finance and Business Services (no exceptions).
- A contingent offer letter
is sent by Human Resources to the selected candidate with the
start date (1st or 3rd Monday) and
approved annual salary.
- The employee must participate
in New Employee Orientation on the first day of employment. All
Employees must attend orientation before they can begin work
- NO EXCEPTIONS. *

*NOTE: |
New employees only have 30 days
from the first day of employment to enroll in the medical and
disability insurance plans. Therefore it is imperative that all
new employees attend New Employee Orientation to obtain important
and time-sensitive information. |
