Richard L. Holmes (AU, ’84)

Having served in the position of senior vice president, Metro Atlanta Region for Georgia Power since 2005, Richard Holmes recently retired after joining the Company in 1974 as Accounting Associate in the Accounting Management Program. As Metro Atlanta Region senior vice president, his management portfolio included electric operations, sales and marketing, customer service & business and office operations, governmental relations and community and economic development. During his tenure at Georgia Power, Mr. Holmes held various managerial positions in customer service, external affairs, and regional operations. In 1999, he became Assistant to the President and CEO of Georgia Power. Following that assignment, he served as Vice President of Region Operations, Vice President of Administrative Services, senior vice president of Corporate Services and chief compliance officer.
Mr. Holmes serves on several boards including the Kennesaw State University Foundation, American Association of Blacks in Energy; Atlanta Beltline Partnership; McPherson Implementation Local Redevelopment Authority; Columbus State University Foundation; and the Atlanta Police Foundation. In 1999, he served as Chairman of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, becoming the first African American to lead the second largest chamber of commerce in Georgia.
He is graduate of Leadership Georgia, Atlanta, Cobb, Columbus, and the Regional Leadership Institute. Mr. Holmes received the Bachelor of Science in business administration from Columbus State University and an MBA from Atlanta University. He also completed the Harvard University Business School Program for Management Development.
