High School Checklist for Upward Bound Students

 

9th Grade

  • Consider your career and educational goals.
  • Learn about colleges and universities.
  • Enroll in challenging coursework.
  • Develop good study habits.
  • Get involved in extra-curricular activities and community service.


10th Grade

  • Consider your career and educational goals.
  • Enroll in challenging coursework, especially those courses colleges consider for admission.  Plan ahead, make sure you will have completed algebra II and geometry by the end of the 11th grade.
  • Take the PSAT.
  • Continue to enroll in challenging coursework.
  • Continue extra-curricular activities and community service.
  • Talk to guidance counselors and Talent Search advisors about colleges you might like to attend.  Visit College Fairs in your area.
  • Investigate financial aid opportunities: scholarships, grants, and loans.


11th Grade

  • Take the PSAT in the fall.  This test taken this year in your high school career serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
  • Take the SAT in the spring.
  • Continue to enroll in challenging coursework, especially those courses colleges consider for admission.  Plan ahead; make sure you will have completed algebra II and geometry by the end of the 11th grade.
  • Collect all the information you can about those colleges you are interested in.  Visit colleges in your area, and take advantage of college trips.
  • Start to put together your resume.  Organize the information that is likely to be requested on college and scholarship applications. 
  • Check out the college application process.  Begin writing your college admissions essay.
  • Continue to work hard in your classes.  Enroll in AP courses in your best subjects if these are available.
  • Conduct a scholarship search.  Visit your scholarship center in your school.
  • Choose courses for senior year that are challenging and that showcase your academic abilities.
  • Look for summer internships that will provide you with the opportunity to explore your career aspirations.
