Undergraduate Program in Political Science The undergraduate program in political science is designed to help students understand how politics affect their lives and the lives and life chances of people at the local, national and international levels. The curriculum presents a rigorous analyses of African American and African experiences in the U.S. and globally in order to facilitate an understanding of human political experiences. Undergraduate Admission Requirements
Students entering Clark Atlanta University must have completed four years of secondary school training and/or have received the GED. Applicants must have finished either course of study with a C average. The high school transcript must be sent by the principal, counselor, or registrar directly to the Office of Admissions, CAU. A transcript of the first three years of course work is adequate for admissions and financial aid purposes. However, upon completion of high school programs, applicants must submit a final transcript showing the date of graduation. Test scores or either the SAT or ACT are also required. Applicants with college credits must have official transcripts or all high school and previous college credits sent to the Office of Admissions. The University requires that transfer students demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement, good character, and separation in good standing from accredited institutions previously attended. Students may not transfer grades below C. Foreign students are required to bear the expense of correspondence, processing fees, and other costs associated with application for admission to CAU. On admission, they are required to show proof of income or demonstrate ability to pay tuition and speak to the International Students Counselors. Program of Study The Department offers a wide range of courses covering international politics, comparative politics, public policy, political theory, the scope and method of political science, urban politics, and public law. In addition, the Department offers an interdisciplinary program in pre-law. At the undergraduate level, the Department also satisfies the General Education curriculum by sharing in the teaching of the required course in social science for all students. Undergraduate students are expected to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 and at least 2.0 in political science. Students who elect a minor or concentration must also earn a 2.0 GPA in that minor or concentration. Students must earn a minimum grade of C in all political science courses. Students falling below this minimum may be placed on academic probation or suspension. Minimum hour required for graduation is 122. Cross registration may be arranged by going through the proper channels in students home department and CAU. Internships The Department encourages students who are interested in community service, job experience, and public service, to enroll in the internship program. The program places students ******. The program provides undergraduate majors with opportunities to work part or full time and receive a minimum of 3 and maximum of 12 credits hours toward their degree. Graduate students may earn a maximum of 3 credit hours through the internship experience. Students interested in the program should contact their adviser for more information. Pre-Law Program The pre-law program, administered by DeJanes closely channels and monitors the progress of students who indicate a desire to earn a law degree following completion of their bachelors degree at CAU. Government and Politics Suggested Undergraduate Course Sequence (It is recognized that, in practice, students may vary according to circumstances) The freshman and sophomore years are primarily concerned with satisfying the General Education Division requirements (These requirements can be reviewed in the GED section of the catalog). However, the sophomore year allows the student to begin work on major courses. All students must complete 54 hours of Core Curriculum courses.
