Jamaica
Study Abroad Program Welcome General Objectives
Program Structure The program is designed as an academic opportunity for students to develop a sense of the sociological, economical, and political realities faced by the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean. Students are taught about Jamaican history, culture and media. There will be interpersonal intellectual exchanges in courses and informal interactions with professors and students at the University of the West Indies, professional journalists, government officials, artists, and leaders in religion, business, and labor. In the research
projects students have the flexibility to explore the differences
in organizational structure, programming, policy-making, production
techniques, and administration between the media systems in Jamaica
and the United States. Generally, lectures take place each morning. The afternoons are devoted to field trips and project research. Participants earn three credit hours by their enrollment in the course Caribbean Culture and Society at the University of West Indies, which is taught by Dr. Clinton Hutton. They earn an additional three credit hours through an independent study course supervised by faculty from Clark Atlanta University. The itinerary includes optional group excursions on the weekends to other parts of the island, including Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, and Negril. Dates The seminar takes place during the last three weeks of July each year. Students may arrange for later return flights. Applications Clark Atlanta University's Jamaica Study Abroad Program is open to students enrolled in two- and four-year colleges and universities who have an interest in communication and at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
