In May 1994, the Clark Atlanta University Board of Trustees approved a bachelor of science (B.S.) in engineering degree program. This engineering program addresses the underrepresentation of African Americans in the engineering field by exposing undergraduate students to engineering instruction coupled with experiments and research experience in state-of-the-art laboratories. It also promotes an applied research orientation, thus facilitating the technology transfer of basic scientific discoveries to products and services. The program's interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary curriculum provides students with a strong background in the physical sciences and mathematics, proficiency in oral and written communications and a thorough foundation in fundamental engineering principles.

The goals and objectives of the Department of Engineering are to produce industrial and scientific leaders and researchers capable of identifying, addressing, and solving technical problems which will not only benefit society but will also regain the nation's preeminence in science and technology.

The Department has linkages with several research institutions, government research laboratories and industries to facilitate summer undergraduate research experience.

The engineering degree program is an option to the existing Dual Degree in Engineering Program (DDEP). The DDEP is a five-year program that awards a degree from Clark Atlanta University and a degree from any of the participating DDEP institutions. These participating institutions include Boston University, Georgia Institute of Technology, North Carolina A&T State University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Technology. Students complete three years at CAU and two years at the DDEP institution.

FACILITIES. Many research centers and laboratories serve as the foundation of the research infrastructure of the Department of Engineering. These research centers and laboratories provide excellent opportunities for students to enhance their education through hands-on experience to participate in research for their senior projects. Modern electronic classrooms equipped with fast desktop computers and multimedia presentation facilities are available to students.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. Several merit-based scholarship opportunities are available to students pursuing engineering degrees at Clark Atlanta University. In addition to many research assistantships and fellowships from government organizations such as NASA, the U.S. Army, department of Defense and Department of Education, eligible students can apply for various scholarships sponsored by Ford, Dupont, General Electric, Texaco, and other companies. A wide variety of summer internship opportunities are also available.

THE PROGRAM. The Department of Engineering at Clark Atlanta University offers prospective students two options:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering at CAU

A four-year program that awards a Bachelor of Science in engineering degree with specialization in chemical, electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering. The program offers the advantage of a closely integrated curriculum, as well as strong and positive interaction with the faculty.
