Background: Prostate cancer
is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American men. Every year in the United States,
approximately 200,000 men are diagnosed with this disease and approximately
30,000 men die of the disease.
African-American men are affected disproportionately, having the highest
rate of incidence and mortality than any other ethnic group. The mortality rate is 2.4 fold higher in
African-American men as compared to Caucasian men. The symposium will feature renowned prostate
cancer researchers, some who have returned from previous symposiums to
celebrate this anniversary year. Topics
of interest will be geared toward the scientific community and individuals
seeking to increase their awareness for prevention, early detection and
treatment. The symposium will begin on
March 15 with a 6 p.m. welcome reception.
