Hicks is One of a Kind

Atlanta, GA
-When people think of a freshman player, they think of someone, who in most cases, is not expected to come in and make a huge difference on the floor because they are “fresh” to the collegiate style of play and the school’s program. This, however, is not the case for Clark Atlanta University freshman guard, Conisha Hicks, who has made an immediate impact on the team both on and off the court and has quickly been thrust into a leadership role.

Hicks, a local standout who prepped at Miller Grove High School (Lithonia, Ga.), has filled some big shoes for Clark Atlanta in her freshman campaign. Despite the team’s 8-19 record, she has produced big numbers and carried the Lady Panthers on her shoulders this season.

“Conisha has brought an excitement and a skill level with her scoring ability that we had been missing in previous years,” said CAU Head Coach Vanessa Moore.

Leading the team and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in scoring, Conisha averaged 20.2 points per game and scored over 500 points this season. She led CAU in double-digit scoring 22 of 27 games including a four-game stint where she scored over 20 points in each contest.

In her first collegiate debut back in November, she put up an impressive 21-point, four rebound effort, and later topped it with a season-high 34-point performance in a losing effort against Fort Valley State to open conference play.

Her 5-foot-3 inch statue does not compare to how big she plays on the floor, averaging 4.9 rebounds per game which places her second on the team in that category, and a team leading 2.6 steals a game. Conisha also tops the team in eight other statistical categories including, but not limited to, 3-point field percentage (37%), 3-point field goals made (64) and free-throw percentage (74%).

“She has been and will continue to be an intrigical part of our team’s growth, and she also represents the athletic program’s academic and community service expectations well,” added Moore.

For her accomplishments, she was recently named to the 2011 Daktronics All-Region second team voted by sports information directors in the region, and was the only SIAC women’s basketball player to receive this honor. Conisha was also selected as the SIAC Newcomer of the Week three consecutive weeks and named the 2011 SIAC Freshman of the Year and All-Conference first team player.

She is a true “Diaper Dandy” in Division II women’s basketball at Clark Atlanta.

Prince-Coleman Leads CAU Past the Lady Lions

Atlanta, GA
- Senior guard Jonae Prince-Coleman’s game-high 17 points lifted the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers (6-11, 4-9) past Paine College 67-58 in conference play at home Tuesday.

CAU bounced back after a two game skid and an earlier season loss to the Lady Lions (1-19, 1-16).

Much of the first half belonged to the Lady Panthers as they dominated the period and led 40-19 at the half. After CAU accumulated a 24-point spread with nine minutes remaining, the Lady Lions made a feisty attempt to climb they way back, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Sophomore guard Shulonda Shaw chipped in 13 points and four rebounds off the bench including nine from downtown and four perfect attempts at the line. CAU’s leading scorer on the season, Conisha Hicks, contributed 14 points, five rebounds and seven steals. Prince also racked up four rebounds and six steals while Catrise Cannady pulled down seven boards as a reserve.

Jasmine Faulkner led four Lady Lions in double figures with 14 points and nine rebounds followed by Antionette McPhail, who recorded a double-double, with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Baiesha Johnson and Brittany Pevey chipped in 10 points each.

The Lady Panthers will host Benedict College Saturday in a 6 p.m., tip-off.
