Study Abroad Process

All Clark Atlanta University students who desire to study abroad must undergo an internal review and be cleared by the Study Abroad Office. The Director of Study Abroad is the only person on campus authorized to register a student for Study Abroad. Students will never be able to register themselves for Study Abroad through the Banner System, therefore, please follow the process outlined below:
I. Student must submit the following to the Study Abroad Office (SAO) in order to initiate the internal review process:

  • Study Abroad Application
  • Two academic recommendations
  • A current unofficial transcript (can be obtained from Bannerweb)
  • Two passport-sized photos (one for records and one for public relations)
  • A copy of financial aid award letter (can be obtained from Bannerweb)

Once all information has been submitted and reviewed, the student is informed as to whether he/she has satisfactorily met all of the criteria to study abroad—a 2.5 GPA or better, and in good social standing at CAU. Successful candidates are given authorization to begin the search for a program. This is done in concert with the Study Abroad advisor to ensure that students are considering programs that will provide courses for which they will receive academic credit at CAU.

II. Student must do the following in order to apply to a program:

  • Obtain and fill out the application (will be reviewed by SA advisor)
  • Obtain course approval from the department chair
  • Obtain proper signatures for the application Apply for scholarships, if eligible (will be reviewed by SA advisor)
  • Send the application to the sponsoring program in a timely fashion (at student’s expense)
  • Download and fill out a complete budget for the program to which he/she has applied

III. Once student has been accepted to the program, he/she is responsible for the following: Making arrangements for housing for the semester he/she will return Making arrangements to meet the financial obligations of the program

IV. The director of Study Abroad will handle the following on behalf of the student while he/she is abroad: Register him/her for the semester he/she is abroad. Registration for the succeeding semester will be done by the student in concert with his academic advisor.
