AAS 301. Introduction to African and African American StudiesAn overview of the discipline of African World Studies: popular and academic attitudes and approaches; its significant historical periods and its definable school of thought; the concepts of discipline, interdisciplinary humanities, social sciences, and area studies as relevant to African American Studies. (3 credits)
AAS 302. The Modern EraAn examination of the African American historical, social and cultural experience in the 20th century, its salient periods (Harlem Renaissance, Black Arts Movement, etc.), arts (jazz, hip hop, rap, etc.), and ideologies (integration, Afrocentrism, etc.). (3 credits)
AAS 501. Africa and the African DiasporaIntroduction to research methods and current concepts of culture and value systems as applied to Africa and African -derived cultures of the Americas. Various cultures of the Diaspora viewed as exemplars. (3 credits)
AAS 535. Africa and African American FolkloreA survey of the principal characteristics of African and African American folklore in its social, historical, and aesthetic contexts. (3 credits)
AAS 550. African and African American MusicA study of the principal characteristics of African American music with pertinent references to music on the Continent. (3 credits)
AAS 560. African American ArtA study of the aesthetic tradition and the social context of African American art. (3 credits)
AAS 564. African ArtA survey of the basic forms and styles of traditional African art and an examination of colonial and post-independence styles and trends. (3 credits)
AAS 601. Directed StudyReadings and other research based on a corpus suited to the research needs and interests of the individual student. (2-3 hour credits)
AAS 630. Seminar in Selected African AmericansMen and women of historical importance in the shaping of destiny or culture, such as Frederick Douglass, W. E. D. DuBois, Alain Locke, are studied in detail. (3 credits)
AAS 640. Seminar in Comparative Black LiteratureSelected research problems comparing and contrasting traditions in Francophone, Afro-Hispanic and African American literature. (3 credits)
